“The Somali community is very interesting because they’re a Muslim community, they’re also a black community, and also an immigrant community…so you engage with 3 phases of law enforcement...The more frequent you interact with law enforcement the higher the rate of something bad occurring”

Abdulmalik Buul is professor and counselor at Southwestern college in San Diego. He is also a community organizer and activist. Abdulmalik joined us to discuss the trump administrations as it relates to white supremacy, Islamaphobia, and immigration policy. He eloquently described the intersectionality of being black, Muslim, and a Somali immigrant. He also shares his unique experience as a Somali youth growing up in East San Diego, and what he’s currently doing to help his community.

Dr. Maria Nieto Senour is a counselor extraordinaire and an elder from our counseling community.  She has an incredible amount of wisdom, is incredibly insightful, and overall one of the warmest people you will meet.

She has worn a lot of hats in her life, some of which include being on the Board of Trustees, Former Director and Administrator of Community-Based Block Counseling Program at SDSU, and the Citizens Police Review Board, as well as many others.

In this episode Maria discusses a variety of topics including her experiences and life lessons as a counselor and mentor, what it was like growing up during segregation and experiencing racism, her family starting one of the first racially integrated restaurants in the US.

How she navigated through the educational system coming from an immigrant family, the current presidential and political climate, and her path as a healer, activist, and community leader.
